Session 1&2 – The New Drug Update, Part 1 & 2

At the conclusion of these sessions, the participant should be able to:

Identify recent FDA drug communications, including but not limited to, labeling changes, warnings, new indications, new dosage forms and MedWatch alerts.

Discuss the new drugs with respect to their pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, approved and unapproved indications.

Describe their adverse effects and drug interactions that may affect patient compliance.

Compare efficacy, dosage and cost to existing agent.

Discuss the patient oriented outcomes or evidence that may or may not exist for each of the new medications and when they may or may not be appropriate to recommend for selected patients.

Compare pharmacotherapy outcomes vs cost/benefit between newly approved agents and existing or lower cost agents.

Session 3 – Evidence-based Medication Therapy Management to Optimize Patient Outcomes

This case based seminar will focus on the safe, effective and affordable use of evidence-based pharmacotherapy comparing new agents against existing agents and the high-level knowledge required to help patients and providers optimize therapeutic outcomes for individual patients. Participants will be given a set of typical patients from a primary care practice setting.

At the conclusion of this program, the participant should be able to:

Complete a medication therapy review utilizing motivational interviewing techniques to include collecting patient specific information to include the patients goals and assessing medication therapies in order to identify, evaluate and create a plan to resolve medication-related problems for a diverse range of patients.

Perform the following tasks, given a patient case including one or more medications:

A. Assess patient-specific data and issues, and interpret these findings to identify the patient's medication-related problems.

B. Account for pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes when reviewing an elderly person's medication regimen.

C. Develop a list of the patient's drug therapy problems.

D. Establish patient accepted goals of therapy for each medical condition and medication-related problem identified.

E. Make appropriate, evidence-based, cost effective recommendations for resolving situations in which a patient's medications are potentially inappropriate and effectively communicate them to the patients primary health care provider.

Review and evaluate multiple patients from a primary care practice setting with commonly seen medical problems and to make appropriate, evidence-based and cost effective recommendations to improve patient outcomes.
