Description:
This course will demonstrate how clinicians can include patients in evidence-based shared decision-making. The course will cover areas of medicine in which shared decision-making significantly enhances care — including diabetes management, joint replacement, mood disorders, screening for lung cancer and osteoporosis treatment. The morning sessions will consist of lectures and discussion panels while the afternoon workshops will give participants hands-on practice at motivational interviewing, eliciting advanced directive choices, agenda setting, and patient-centered teaching. Teaching methods include lectures, panel question-and-answer sessions with faculty and hands-on practice.

Target Audience: This course is appropriate for physicians in family practice, general practice, internal medicine and geriatrics. This course is also appropriate for residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and allied health professionals.
