Overview
Diabesity is a crisis affecting every state, every city, every community, and every school across our great nation and in other countries around the world. Nearly two out of every three Americans are overweight or obese. One out of every eight deaths in America is caused by an illness directly related to overweight and obesity. This situation creates a need for quality continuing medical education aimed at changing patients behavior. This CME program will help provide primary care healthcare professionals with knowledge and skills, to be effective in helping reduce and manage obesity and diabetes in patients.

Target Audience
Family Physicians and all Physicians and other Healthcare Professionals interested in learning more about Obesity and Diabetes issues.

Our presenting national faculty speakers made it their professional goals to enhance the training of primary care healthcare professionals. This Continuing Medical Education program promises to help learn the most current, best medicine, and techniques for making the diagnosis easier and quicker during a 20 minute office visit.

Understanding Diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and Atypical Forms of Diabetes
Objectives: 1) State four of the ADA criteria for screening patients < 45 years of age for Diabetes 2) List 4 of the core defects of Type 2 Diabetes 3) List three characteristics which lead to suggestion of Type 1 vs Type 2 diabetes

Individualizing Care of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Objectives: 1) State 3 patient characteristics which would suggest appropriate A1c of 7 - 7.9% 2) List 6 agents recommended as second line therapy by the ADA Position Statement 3) State 2 criteria for starting insulin as first

Management of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Diabetes
Objectives: 1) State ADA targets for BP for patients < 65 2) State ADA/AHA/ ACC recommendations for patients with uncomplicated diabetes 3) List 2 indications for ACE/ARB therapy in diabetes

Microvascular Complications of Diabetes: Screening and Management
Objectives: 1) List three annual tests for screen for microvascular complications of diabetes 2) Name thee medications for treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy 3) Understand diagnosis and treatment of diabetic macular edema

Type 1 Diabetes
Objectives: 1) State glycemic goals for patients with type 1 diabetes 2) Understand role of basal vs rapid actin insulins in management of hyperglycemia 3) State advantages of insulin pump therapy in Type 1 DM

Insulin Management and Glucose Monitoring in Diabetes
Objectives: 1) List indications for insulin therapy in Type 2 diabetes 2) Understand how to use and interpret home glucose monitoring 3) To understand benefits of continuous glucose monitoring

Physiology of Obesity (Why our Patients Can't Lose Weight)
Objectives: 1) Learner will understand the general problem of managing obesity in a primary care setting 2) Participants will learn to recognize common facilitators of weight gain 3) Participants will develop approaches to formulating a plan to manage obesity

Medical Management of Obesity
Objectives: 1) Review the medication approved to manage obesity 2) Develop an approach to selection of appropriate patients for medical or surgical interventions for weight loss 3) Discuss a case based approach to obesity management to highlight potential drug-drug interactions and side effect profiles associated with our newer obesity medications

Surgical Management of Obesity
Objectives: 1) Review the evaluation and management of the Bariatric Patient through a case based study 2) Provide a schedule for long term medical follow up of the patient following weight loss surgery 3) Provide the learner with a platform to provide identification and management of common complications from bariatric surgery

Drugs that Cause Weight Gain (My doctor made me gain weight)
Objectives: 1) Describe common drugs that contribute to weight gain 2) Review the negative metabolic consequences from psych meds, to steroids contrast medication for diabetes as they relate to weight

Low Fat v Low Carb Diets - How do I prescribe?
Objectives: 1) Provide the learner with an approach to selecting an appropriate dietary intervention for the obese patient 2) Review the evidence for dietary interventions 3) Discuss the emerging role of the micro-biome in medicating diets effects on weight

Motivating the Patient to MOVE (Exercise Prescriptions)
Objectives: 1) Discuss how to provide an exercise prescription 2) Review available resources to support success of the patient 3) Highlight different approaches for different populations


This live activity is being reviewed for up to 15 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to the AMA PRA category 1 credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
