Description:
Without the proper tools, training and strategies, health care professionals seemingly tolerate a certain amount of unprofessional/ unsafe behavior in their institutions. Behavior by healthcare professionals that undermines a culture of safety is first and foremost a threat to quality of care and patient safety, while also affecting staff morale and increasing cost burdens to a healthcare organization.

This program will acquaint organizational leaders with tools, strategies, and skills to address unnecessary variation in behavior or performance, including behaviors that undermine a culture of safety, and provide a comprehensive plan adaptable to all healthcare organizations. The methodology presented is an essential component of a plan to address The Joint Commission’s July 2008 Alert #40, Behaviors that undermine a culture of safety. (http://www.jointcommission.org/assets/1/18/SEA_40.pdf)

This interactive, case-based presentation begins by introducing reasons it is vital to identify and address both systems and individuals’ behaviors, and the barriers to addressing such behaviors often faced by organizations and their members. A model for graduated levels of interventions for addressing what appears to be problematic behavior/unsafe systems is presented, and participants practice skill-building exercises based on clinical scenarios.
