Description:
From the September 2014 issue of The Clinical Advisor: Over the past 2 decades, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity among US adults. Over time, excess body weight has a deleterious effect on nearly every major organ system; common long-term complications include type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.

Even a relatively small degree of weight loss can help to mitigate or prevent numerous cardiometabolic health conditions. Lifestyle modifications remain the first-line intervention for the treatment of obesity and improvement of weight-related health risks. However, many overweight/obese patients do not fully understand the long-term health risks of excess body weight and are unaware of how to effectively implement sustainable behavioral changes.

To improve the ability of clinicians to effectively educate patients on the long-term health risks of obesity and evidence-based strategies for effective lifestyle changes for weight loss, this CME/CE activity will present the latest data on issues related to routine weight monitoring/assessment of overweight and obese patients and will illustrate appropriate counseling strategies for integration of lifestyle interventions.
