Description:
Sleep disorders are commonly encountered in children, yet they are often under recognized and under treated. Recently, there has been an increasing awareness regarding sleep disorders and their consequences in children such as emotional, behavioral and learning difficulties, as well as adverse cardiovascular and neurocognitive outcomes.

This pediatric sleep disorders course will provide a comprehensive overview of the common sleep disorders in children. The course is designed for pediatricians, family practitioners, sub-specialists, sleep technologists and nurse practitioners who are interested in treating children and young adults with sleep disorders. It will include a review of normal sleep and outline the burden of sleep problems in children. Specific areas of emphasis will include evaluation and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, sleep and ADHD, sleep disordered breathing in children with special needs, nocturnal events, difficulty with initiating and maintaining sleep and promoting good sleep hygiene in teenagers. It will review the current standards of practice, and give cutting edge updates about recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric sleep disorders. There will be a break-out session which will cover various aspects of pediatric sleep medicine in a small group setting.

Discussion topics will include:
