Description:
This course provides practical, up-to-date instruction primarily for full- and part-time medical examiners and coroners. Police officers, attorneys, forensic nurses, and other members of the death investigation team will benefit from acquiring in-depth understanding of current standard medical examiner/ coroner daily practices. The seminars are formulated with the intention of providing current and exhaustive coverage in forensic sciences on an annual recurring basis. Thus, the complexity of the topics presented will range from basic to advanced.

As a result of attending this conference, participants will understand:
•current concepts in Maternal and Infant Death investigations
•the difficulties associated with investigating Elder Abuse
•anthropologic models and time since death in decomposed and skeletonized remains
•how the ME's office can learn to work with the Media
•identification of classic transportation injuries and cause of death
•review of deaths from gunshot wounds
•investigate and review the pathology of sudden, unexpected but natural deaths in neuropathology
•pathology and documentation of cardiac deaths beyond the usual MI
•household explosives cause and effect
•current forensic controversies
•how a prosecutor, defense attorney and judge evaluate an expert witness
•the best techniques to evaluate indoor scenes for trace evidence

Participation by interactive voting and discussion regarding difficult manner of death determinations is always a lively and productive presentation. This course is well known for the informal give and take of these sessions, the perfect mixture of scholarship and congeniality for the close of each academic day at Colby. This entire educational program is relaxed and informal. Please come and join us in Maine this summer for what we feel will be a great experience.
